Holiday Eating and Invisalign®

One of the key benefits of Invisalign is that you can go about your normal daily routine while straightening your teeth. Invisalign is comfortable, easy to wear and remove. Plus, for those who love to eat (that’s pretty much all of us), there’s no need to worry about food getting lodged between braces or brackets.

Eating and Invisalign

Even though the Invisalign aligner is strong and durable, you should remember to remove it prior to eating or drinking beverages. Sometime the chewing action can break, crack or alter the aligner. Even the smallest damage to your aligners can prevent them from doing the job they need to do which is moving your teeth to their optimum position. Plus, eating while wearing Invisalign can get very messy (trust us on this one)!

Beverages and Invisalign

Regarding liquids, hot drinks can also cause the Invisalign aligner to distort. This distortion may cause the aligner from affecting how it straightens your teeth.  Furthermore, fluids can seep inside the aligner and “bathe” the teeth. Bathing or covering teeth in acidic fluids can be especially problematic, as the acids will slowly wear out the enamel.  Usually, exposure to acidic liquids does not pose a problem since saliva acts to neutralize the acid. However, when you’re wearing an aligner, saliva prevented from doing its job, thereby increasing your risk for tooth decay.

Colored drinks could also change the color of your teeth and while discoloration can be temporary, some stubborn stains may be difficult to remove. So, to prevent tooth decay and discoloration, make sure you brush your teeth after every meal or beverage prior to putting on your aligners.  If you do not have access to a toothbrush, chew sugar-free gum to remove bacteria, acid, and food particles from your teeth and brush as soon as you get home.  As a last resort, you can leave out your aligners for one to two hours until you can brush and floss.  Then prior to inserting your aligner, rinse it in lukewarm water or use the Invisalign cleaning kit.
